Posted: Sat Jun 12, 2004 12:49 am Post subject: Seeking Eastern European Teaching Position |
|
|
I am seeking a teaching position in a European Country. I am particularly interested in teaching in Eastern European countries (i.e., Poland, Hungary, Romania). However, I would be willing to look at other interesting positions as well. I have a Master of Education degree and I am a certified teacher in Arizona (USA). Below is my brief resume. Where else would I post this message for greatest visibility on ESL Employment website?
Thank you.

Hello Juan
I am a Vocational Instructor but I've not had any experience teaching in Eastern Europe. However, I do know that the salaries there are not very good and would be considerably less than you're getting now.
With your qualifications and experience you should have no problem getting a teaching position. You must be very modest. I would not bother looking for places in which to put your message. However, I would advise that you write direct to the best schools in the country of your choice. Of course, you would need to speak their language unless you are going to do TEFL and in that case you should have no problem.
Best of luck
Kenneth |

I should have added that I was offered a teaching position at the Bratislava University in Slovakia for 6 crowns an hour, which is 0.14 Euros or $0.16 at the current rate of exchange. It is very cheap to live there and so you can survive.
However, I earn 26 Euros per hour teaching in the UK and therefore, I was reluctant to go. Never the less, it would have looked good on my CV. |

Do you have a European passport? If not it's important to note that many Eastern European countries are either in or hoping to join the EU and this will make it difficult, if not impossible, for non-Europeans to get legal work there teaching in schools.
EU members: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, UK
Candidate Countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Turkey.

Yes, I understand. I am working on getting one personally and the program I am going through works with the various education ministries in host countries to secure a work visa.
Nonetheless, thanks for the information!

The ESL industry is going through a revolution now with people getting kicked out for having diploma-mill degrees. Are you a non-EU citizen looking for work in new EU countries? Won't be easy. IMHO, you're gonna be hard-pressed to find a respectable European institution that will see those American online graduate degress you have from both Capella U and U of Phoenix as anything but real. If it's an education job you're after, you'd probably be better off going with your real residence institution Bachelor's and getting something like a SIT-TESOL course certificate or similar. Those online degrees might impress some high school in the boondocks but don't believe for a second that a university hiring committee won't look up your credentials. Be careful is what I say. _________________
