Hello. I'm a 48-year-old American ESL teacher. I've been teaching here in Seville, Spain for over fifteen years, and I'd like to find a job in a summer camp in the Galicia region for the month of July.
Any ideas on how I might go about this?
Warm regards,

Hi!
I'm also 49 and currently live in Florida. My husband and I are seeking to buy a property and move to Galicia region within the next year. I am evaluating ESL certification courses to take in Madrid this spring or early summer. I understand either the Trinity or Cambridge certifications are most desirable for employment. Any direction here? Or which school in Madrid? Also, anything you can share about the Galicia region and potential job opportunites there would be greatly appreciated. (Pontevedra vs Coruna?) We want to be near the coast, but a bit out in the country with 2-5 acres. Idea is to do a mini-B&B and/or an English instruction/immersion "camp," as well as teach locally in a more permanent type position.
My career background is in sales, marketing and training. Have also had three successful businesses of my own. Three years of college (marketing/communications major - no degree), 7 years of French and 3 of Spanish, both including college level coursework. My Spanish is rusty, but I have a good grasp of, and generally ease with, romance languages. We were in Italy in September, and I actually got a good quick grasp of "survival" Italian! Anyway, I just need to do my own little immersion program and get back up to speed. I live in a practically bi-lingual state, as it is!!
Any insight you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Maybe we can even hook up in somewhere in Galicia in July, if I'm back again at that time.
Look forward to hearing from you, and good luck with your job search!

I'm afraid I can't be of much help to you, Cherie. I'm sure either of those certificates would be fine, but how are you going to get your work permit? Unless your husband is a Spanish national, I don't see how you're going to get one.
Perhaps someone else out there could be of help.
Regards,

Thank you for your reply! I'm still doing a TON of research to determine the challenges I will face. I wish I could find someone to sit down with for two hours (a week?) , and ask questions/take notes. I know there are challenges with a work permit, but am clueless as to the extent. Also...as an owner of property and as a resident alien - latitude vs. limitations . I'm currently drowning in a sea of GREY. Ultimately I would like to do on-site immersion programs for business people (Spaniards who need to learn English), as well as 'study abroad' for Americans or Europeans who want/need to learn Spanish. I'm unclear on private or entrepreneurial employment vs. working for an institution. Ultimately, during my transition I would hope to be able to consider both. Oh, well, I digress. And, no, my husband is not a Spanish national. As it looks, I plan to be in Madrid in April or May (maybe, OUCH, March) to take a Trinity cetified TESL program and begin my search for property somewhere in Galicia. Coruna or Pontevedra, or elsewhere??? Would like to be near the coast, yet a a more "country/rural" setting a bit inland. I also understand the Spanish govt. does something with tax advantages for a 'casa turismo rural?' This info, however, came from an American whose husband is actually originally from Coruna. I amy not be considered a "player." Anyway...please stay in touch. Keep me abreast of insights or resources you may come across.
Lastly, have YOU obtained a work permit due to "family' or otherwise?
Thank you, again!

Yes, I have a residency/work permit (it's just one document now; used to be two) because my wife is Spanish.
You might want to consult with an attorney who specializes in these matters when you come over to do your Trinity course.
Good luck! |

WOW, that was quick. Thank you. Maybe I need to get divorced, do a Spanish marriage 'of convenience' and move forward. Just kidding!! Again, I'm diligently, if not painfully, sifting thru all of this STUFF. I WILL find my rainbow!
Regards to your wife, take care, and stay in touch!

Matamoros, Cherie and others,
I am a graduating senior at an university in the United States, and I want to return (I studied abroad in Santiago de Compostela in the spring of 2005) after graduation. I am currently looking for any positions, but I feel that my interests and skills are best suited for ESL work. Do either of you, or anyone has, have any information about finding employment in Galicia?
Thanks. i appreciate any insight.
