It is said that there are about 100,000 foreigners teaching English in China. But there is also a burgeoning industry in full swing involving a number of Australians teaching English, maths and science as part of the current year 10 syllabus. In 2005 there will be approximately ten sites offering programs that employ either the Queensland Year 10 or the Unilearn Foundation Program curricula. Currently employment opportunities are being offered in China with other international sites expected to come on board in the near future. Successful Chinese junior middle school students are then eligible to complete years 11 and 12 at selected Australian high schools. Students pay about A$8-10,000/year for tuition and $170-200 a week for a homestay.
As a result of this and other programs, a local newspaper recently reported there are about 50,000 foreign students currently in Queensland alone. Moreover, students often opt to stay on and continue their tertiary education in Oz. As I'm considering an “offshore” position myself in Shenzhen starting in November, I would be interested to hear from teachers who have had such an experience, The salary for Australians teaching the year 10 curriculum is apparently about 2 to 3 times the normal foreigner’s rate but it does involve more than the usual 15-18 teaching hours plus as you might expect, a lot of marking. I have only been to Shenzhen once, on a day visit with a group of senior students (from Zhaoqing, in 2004) and would therefore like to hear from anyone who has taught there. _________________ Xianzai wo zai Qunsilan Daxue Xuexi Zhongwen san nianji |

Hey Gerard,
Did you make any progress with your search? I'm primarily interested in Eastern Europe but Asia is not out of the question.
