I have ten years of teaching experience. Most of it is in SPED. How does one get certification in ESL? How do you break into the field? Is knowledge of more than one language necessary? Is there a different certification for teaching in USA schools vs teaching overseas?

Hi rochesternative - There are a number of options for you to get into ESL. One is to study for an MA TESOL, another is to take a certification course such as the CELTA, Trinity Cert TESOL or SIT TESOL. Here's a list of centres offering certification.

Requirements for jobs, in terms of qualifications and experience, vary from country to country and from school to school, so you will need to do some research - have a look at some job advertisements for countries where you're interested in teaching to get an idea of the typical requirements, and take it from there. Very few schools require knowledge of more than one language.

Nipchee - what is your home country?

Hi,

Essentially the certification you get will depend on where you want to teach. Locally you'll need to ask the state board for the kind of cert they will accept, overseas it's horses for courses.

And no, you don't need to know the local language if you move overseas (although it can help).

Take a look at the Teaching FAQ here: http://free-esl.com/channels/tfaq/default.asp for more on this.
