My contract for teaching in China is up in January and I quite fancy going over to Bulgaria. Failing that, Eastern Europe. Just wondering if anyone has been and can give me some recomendations on where to go. Also, any advice on which countries I should avoid for safety reasons, and where it is easiest to get a job. I am a fully certified teacher native speaker from UK.
I would particularly like to hear from anyone who can put me in contact with schools in Bulgaria, as I am finding it very hard to locate any jobs there. |

I'm assuming you would probably end up in Sofia...but Bulgaria is pretty pricey for Eastern Europe...why not look at other less expensive countries...say Russia, Ukraine or Poland. Have you given those a thought? That being said what's the interest in Bulgaria anyway?

| When I was working in London, I taught several students from Bulgaria, and this put the idea in my head. I am open to other ideas, but I don't know much about Eastern Europe, so that's why I am calling on the knowledge of others here. |

Good enough reason for me. The only problem that I can see...which you have already noted is the jobs seem to be sparse in Bulgaria...or at least difficult to dig up.
Maybe the British Council there can help you out:

There usually pretty helpful and may be able to recommend other, local employers.

Do tell.
I am interested in teaching in Bulgaria so any information would be warmly received. As I am having a hard time finding anything at the moment, I am widening my job hunting to Poland as well. |

Hi,
I am a EFL Teacher from Bulgaria, currently in UK trying to find a job as an English Teacher, which turned out to be extremely difficult. Anyway,
for those who are looking for a job there, I would recommend you to go for Sofia, Veliko Tarnovo, Varna or Plovdiv. There are big cities not in the sense of as big as London but life there is inexpensive and in the Language schools and Colleges always prefer to employ someone who is a native speaker. I think you should not have any problem finding a teaching position there, the only problem is that from Internet is a bit difficult to find any current vacancies. The reason for that is that our schools and colleges are a bit old-fashioned and they are still learning how to use Internet. Also is a good idea if you contact British Council in Sofia, they might be able to help you and give you directions.
Congratulations for your desire to go and teach English in Eastern Europe, that's definitely going to be a very different experience.
Regards,
Valentina |

Hey maria_st, I'm interested in your contacts to teach in Bulgaria. I am going to Poland next month and am going to teach at a language school there. After that I am looking to go to another European country so that by then I would have had some teaching experience. Maybe you can give me school names, email addresses, and phone numbers of schools that hire ESL teachers. Thanks. |
