Hey all! I have recently finished a 7 month course of German language in Europe. I had such a wonderful experience that I am now considering becoming a ESL Certified Teacher. I have no experience in the teaching profession. I have worked in the Hospitality field for over 10 years now. I absolutely love to travel and I love to socialize with people of all nationalities.
My question is this, is this at all feasable? I was considering getting my ESL/TESOL Certificate through one of those on-line programs. However, I am worried that this will be a waste of my time and money. Will an employer even consider me if I have no experience and my certificate was obtained on-line?
Is it necessary to have a university degree in teaching? Does anyone know what the best route is for me? I have gotten just about everything I can out of the Hospitality field and I am ready to go in a new direction.
Any information on this subject is much appreciated. |

You’ll find that standard entry level qualifications for most countries and jobs are a degree plus a certificate. The degree does not need to be in English or Education or Teaching. It can be in any subject.
As for online TESL/TEFL Certificate courses, these have existed for many years, some good, some bad, some outright scams. However regardless of their individual worth they were often regarded as the “step-sister” of more traditional courses. The trend has changed and even major universities around the globe have made the switch to online learning.
You should also know that many good schools around the world happily accept online TESL/TEFL Certificates issued by reputable organizations. So if you are looking for a way to get some basic training and a foot in the door, online training is an option worth considering.
Just make sure you choose a reliable course provider, and this applies to any course whether it is conducted online or onsite. _________________ ICAL- Quality Online TEFL Training since 1998 |

Dear Tia,
I tend to think that an EFL Diploma is sometimes regarded as more important than a Bachelor Degree Diploma. My example, I have a Bachelor Degree in German and English Languages, but this proves only that I studied these languages, and not necessarily that I can teach them...if I had an EFL Diploma instead of the Bachelor Diploma, things would be different. But...would it be better? You can find the answer by yourself.
Good luck! |
