Hello,

I am starting to look for a teaching job overseas. A couple of employers that I have contacted have asked for what seems to be appropriate items. However, they are also asking for an electronic copy of my passport. In an age of internet fraud, I have been hesitant to give them a copy of this.

Can anyone comment on the appropriateness of this ???

This request is at the beginning of the hiring process...not in the later stages....

Thanks for the insight....

Dave

Happens a lot. Many schools simply want to ensure you are from where you say you are from. One workaround for not giving away too much sensitive info is to scan the passport photo page but black out the passport number, and any other other info not needed, before emailing it off.

Some countries (only a few) will actually start visa processing with a copy or fax of the passport. That could be part of it, but most likely, it's like Guy said, just making sure you are who you say you are.

Hi Dave,

I've been involved in TEFL recruitment for almost 8 years. We usually need the passport scan to kick off the visa process (every authority I've worked with is happy with the scan until they need to put the stamp in the passport).

Personally I never ask for the passport until the interview is arranged and I want people to find it and scan it so I can start processing asap after the interview if they are successful. You would be surprised how many candidates lose or have forgot to renew their passports!!!

If you have concerns, don't be afraid to tell the employer you have the passport, it is upto date and you will provide it later in the process when an interview is arranged. A decent employer should understand.

Some employers use the "need for a passport" to check that the candidate "fits their profile" - this could be anything from no long hair or nose studs to blatant racism. Which reflects the industry's need for the Director of Studies to have a decent amount of influence over the school owner so that fair and equal recruitment practices are adhered to.

I hope this helps
