Hey Mozilla,
Depends where you are planning on going. To me, America is overseas, and I get the impression that without a TESOL, jobs there are difficult to get. In Asia, a TEFL is adequate for most positions that are available, and in some countries you can get by without a TEFL at all. Depends on the number of teachers floating about looking for work and so on. Think of it this way, the better your qualification, the more options you will have available, and hte better your job options will be. Your investment will make a difference somewhere along the line - that is the nature of giving yourself an education. If you don't do an TEFL, you will still get a job, I'm sure, it's just a matter of whether it's the job that you would like to have. |

I'm not sure what you mean by saying the TEFL is cheaper and requires less time. Virually all of the on-site programs run by the well known course providers are four weeks. Typically only programs run via universities are longer as they are run like a typical classroom.
As for TEFL vs. TESOL, the terms are basically interchangeable when discussing a certificate. There's the CELTA, which is designed for learning to teach adults, then there's tefl certs. But they're both essentially TESOL certs, i.e., a certificate for teachers of English as a second language. So, whether a cert is less money is simply a matter of the price from that provider, not the nature of the cert.
As for job availability, having an actual qualification as a teacher will put you at the top of the list of a majority of schools, particularly in certain areas, such as Korea. Having the cert would show you've actually learned about teaching language acquisition, which, if you're serious about teaching, would be good. Hopefully you won't assume that teaching science is the same as teaching a language course. Learning theory is the same, but language acquisition is a little different affair.
Follow the link below for some info on TESOL/TEFL cert provider industry.
Best of luck! _________________ teflintltrainer
