I am a Canadian citizen living in Canada for part of the year and since my husband is a professional hockey player, we live over in Germany from August-April. To keep me from going crazy with boredom, I would really like to set up an ESL job for myself for this coming fall. I already have a Bachelor of Physical Education & Recreation, as well as experience teaching preschool for one year. I have been debating whether or not to take the TEFL course, because I am not as flexible as most people in where I work, and would need to find a job in a specific part of Germany. What I would like to know is, how likely is it that I will be able to find a TEFL job in Germany? Any help would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hello Ninny

Non-EU nationals — including people from the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand — do need a permit (Arbeitserlaubnis), and these are not easy to get. Unemployment remains high in Germany, and authorities are not allowed to issue work permits to non-EU nationals for a job that can be filled by an unemployed EU national

Early September is the best time to arrive, when the holidays are over. This is usually when schools need teachers. TEFL is dead in July and August!

Virtually 'all' private schools employ teachers on a freelance, hourly-rate basis.

Where in Germany, specifically, would you want to teach? Let me know and I will send you addresses of language schools in that area.

You could say I've spent some time in Germany.

I agree with UK Flag Man there, you should get there in SEptember, which it sounds like you won't plan on doing. You will really get a good chance if you can get up with an employer before hand and get a job offer, if anybody can see you through the EU red tape, its the employer. Defintiely look into Berlitz who's huge and professional and could probably hire you already while your in Canada, and you could probably take their German classes and learn that language while you're at it. Say what you want about language learning, but these guys are the class, have been forever, and remain on the forefront.

So, Scott, have you worked for Berlitz then?

Tell us a little more what that's like please. We don't have too many posters on here that hail from the Berlitz school system. Are they a good place to work for Question

I had a friend that worked for them once but he wouldn't tell me too much about it (kind of secretive) except that they have their own in-house training. I guess they don't use the standard TEFL cert. as their way in?

Look forward to hearing from you,

Lee
