Hi all.

Just a quick one.

I know my C&G 7407 stage 1 and 2 took longer and had more teaching practice and observations than an intensive CELTA or Trinity TESOL course. But will my qualifications be recognised overseas?

I I have a BA in English Lit. A level English language.
have one years experience of teaching English in a reputable Thai junior school.
currently teach 3 hours of ESOL and 3 hours of Entry Level Adult Numeracy/Literacy per day.

Hello

Probably not but you would have to explain to them that it is teacher qualification required for teaching in Colleges of Further Education, much superior to a TEFL certificate.

Thank you UJ for your prompt response.

I notice that you are a site administrator and your knowledge and experience in this area is appreciated.

My main concern is that every decent job I have seen advertised in South East Asia specifies a TESOL or CELTA/DELTA.

As you rightly say, nobody will have heard of a 7407 and employers may think it is one of those teaching certificates you can pick up over the Internet!

In my position, how would you approach employers to overcome this potential hurdle?

Thanks again for your advice.

Sometimes, we tell the interviewer far too much and then we don't get the job. Often times, the interviewer is not a teacher but the owner of the school and a business man. If you don't give the answer, that's been written by someone else, on his card, you've had it; he doesn't know any better.

You know you are well qualified and experienced to do the job therefore, you should have no qualms about presenting your Degree along with your Teaching Certificate. If you are questioned about it, tell them it's more advanced than the CELTA/DELTA certificate. Tell them that this certificate enables you to teach in all of the Colleges of Further Education in the United Kingdom. Tell them in great detail, talk their heads off about it. How dare they.

Usually, copies of your qualifications are sent along with your job application and so a lot of the queries are sorted out long before the interview.

Don't let the job requirements stop you from applying for the job, because often they are asking for far too much and so, even if you haven't got exactly what they want, if you are the best one at the interview, the job's yours

Best of luck

UJ

okay...i'll have to disagree with UJ a bit here. Firstly the minute you start 'telling' a prospective employer anything...then you can gaurantee the next thing they will "TELL" you is don't let the door hit you where the sun don't shine.

If you go into an interview situation thinking you are going to educate your prospective employer then you are fundamentally flawed in your approach.

There is a fine line between being confident...and being arrogant...stay on the confident side of the line.
