After 3 months of people trying to sell me a TEFL certificate telling me that I cannot teach legally in China without one, I contacted SAFEA, in Shanghai and they told me that THERE IS NO LEGAL REQUIREMENT BY THE GOVERNMENT OF CHINA TO HAVE A TEFL CERTIFICATE TO TEACH IN CHINA.

I then found this online to see if anyone was actually telling the truth: https://www.scam.com/showthread.php?616386-China-Scam-Alert!-Fake-TEFL-amp-TESOL-Certificate-Requirement-Fraud-Targets-ESL-Teachers-Teach-In-China-Jobs

This company seems to be the one that keeps spreading the false information...

Thank you for posting this Shannon. Many people get confused or have misunderstandings after speaking with recruiters who are also collecting referral fees for TEFL course enrollments. http://chinafraudpatrol.blogspot.tw/2014/09/2014-china-foreign-teacher-tefl-tesol.html

We think a genuine TEFL course is a great idea for new ES:/TEFL teachers who never taught anything before coming to China, BUT we also think software study at home courses and online courses are not the way to go and are not very effective. Also. the certificates they issue are only recognized in a handful of third-world countries.

If you are already in China, you may want to check out the TEFL night programs at BFSU, Peking, and Renmin universities. SAFEA also offers a weekend program. If you are still abroad, the Trinity Celta program is the one most teachers have recommended to us and each other but the CFTU makes no official endorsement of any product or service.

Before taking any job in China however, we suggest you visit and read three websites to protect yourself from "problems".
