I laughed when I first heard about this, but after my GF became a victim, it was a wake up call for me. Interpol told us she was one of just 12 million victims world-wide every year, and that 86% of the victims are expats,- and mostly teachers. In Asia 25% of all foreign teachers, become victims. https://www.reddit.com/r/ChinaTeacherAlliance/comments/mwbtsv/2021_csp_report_why_you_must_never_send_your/

Yep. This is great advice, but 4 years too late for me. They got me for $8,700 and it cost me $3,000 for lawyer to clean up the mess and 13 months to get my good credit restored. But the worst part of it all was the stress and fear that the scammer could do even more damage. Now when I send out resumes, I deliberately misspell my last name, do not give a date of birth (only my age) never an address, and only a disposable email address that I only use for job applications.
