I had worked with ESL teachers for about 8 years in China. Most of them were unhappy when they left. The only one that refused to admit he's unhappy was a guy whose real intention was not to teach language.

ESL teachers are vulnerable. The recruiting agents and employers know you couldn't find a job in your home country. You may be desperate. You are willing to risk a lot to teach in a country you don't really know well to earn a living. Teachers are often not paid what they were told. Welfare is often not either.

Sometimes employers would suddenly close their business without paying teachers or refunding students. In one case, an American woman even wrote to officials in her district to ask for help. She still failed to get paid.

I didn't know it's getting worse, not improved.

But usually, the Chinese students don't set up scams.

Why don't you think about teaching online on your own website? You don't need any platform or school in the middle.

So long as the turnover of TEFL teachers remain above 40% the scams will surely continue because the scammers exploit the gullible, naive, and ignorant newbies for thousands of dollars. Colleagues, I urge you all to educate yourself and the newbies at your school by visiting these links that will keep all of us out of harm's way, especially in China...

Btw... you have a greater chance of being ripped off by a fellow-foreigner (usually TEFL recruiters, visa agents, or job agents/brokers) than by local Chinese with very few exceptions.
